Dept of Baduk Studies over the world
Although the history of Baduk department is short, its name is widely known not only in Korea but also in foreign countries. Since the 1st International Conference on Baduk Studies in 2001, Myongji University, its Baduk Studies has been widely known over the world and has made a strong impression on Baduk fans and intellectuals around the world. In this conference, many topics such as Baduk education, Baduk industry, cognitive science, Baduk history were presented, and in particular western intellectuals expressed great interest in this academic activity. Along with the conference, the foreign participants had time to interact with the Baduk students and also had the opportunity to experience the vivid Baduk culture of Korea.
At the European Go Congress in 2003, along with 2nd International Conference on Baduk Studies, many students participated in a number of competitions to communicate with Go fans in Europe and to promote Korean Baduk. Western fans were pleased to say, "Korea finally moves", and have great expectation on the role of Myongji University's Baduk Department to penetrate Baduk over the world.

The Department of Baduk has received mass attention from the media recently. Three professional channels, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet often cover news about the Baduk department. The fresh ideas from the department of Baduk and the activities of the graduates have helped to revitalize the Baduk world. The work done by the Baduk department professors and members of the Baduk society have attracted the attention of journalists and is now a trending topic in news outlets. Especially the strategy and gameplay which our ancestors left behind, academic symposium, and news related to foreign Baduk, are redecorating Baduk News pages. News about the achievements of the department’s students Baduk games, unusual events, and various activities of graduates are drawing the attraction of fans. Foreign students from Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia are studying in the department of Baduk and their achievement is also publicized
New Paradigm Creation
The Department of Go is playing a role in transforming the “technical biased” paradigm, biased towards games and victory into a cultural and overall paradigm. The traditional approach of the Baduk world has been extremely focus on playing the game of Baduk and determining the optimal strategy. As a result, overlooking the various functions and social roles of Baduk, the potential value of Baduk culture. Away from this function-oriented perspective and paying attention to various aspects of Baduk, the mission of the Baduk Department is to pursue a scientific inquiry and lead to a real understanding of Baduk. In particular, the Baduk department takes a macro approach to Baduk as like Baduk education for children, systematic understanding on Baduk culture, development of Baduk industry. With this kind of approach, the department of Baduk is establishing philosophical and scientific foundations on gameplay, sports, and etiquette. Baduk can also be a catalyst to promote physiological methods and applications to other mental sports. Baduk, a leading game in mental sports research, will make a significant contribution to the development of Baduk culture at home and abroad.
