Introduction and Characteristics
The Department of Architecture has a 40-year history and professionals produced from our department have been playing a crucial role in the architecture industry. Since 2002, it has significantly evolved as a college of Architecture from the original department of Architecture under the college of Engineering. Under the independent college system, the curriculum has been reorganized as a Five-year B. Arch. Course that meets international architectural certification standards. Based on it, we acquired Korea's first internationally recognized certificate from the Korea Institute of Architecture and Education in 2007. Therefore, architecture department graduates completed their education under the accredited education program of Architecture department in Myongji University and can have the same status and competitiveness in the global architecture market. Since 2014, it has been reorganized into three majors, Architecture, Traditional Architecture, and Space Design, and is expanding its connection with neighboring disciplines including architecture and space design. Within the 5-year undergraduate program, students can take a variety of theoretical courses offered by the majors of Architecture, Traditional Architecture and Spatial Design. More than 40 design studios are opened each semester.
As a major educational facility, an information library, a library dedicated to architecture, was secured in 2003 and print room in 2004. Above all, in 2005, a five-story, 3,012㎡center was built to create a stable and comfortable educational space for students. The International Education Program has been hosting design workshops in collaboration with the University of Venice, Italy, during summer vacations since 2004 so that students can have a richer and broader experience in their field globally. Since 2007, the department has been organizing workshop programs at Sapienza University in Rome and in New York, and operating students exchange program with Sapienza University. We continue to expand international education opportunities for our students, and plan to run programs in Asia.
After the certification of international building education, we plan to run a specialization program to meet the demands of the diversified construction market and innovate new markets. In 2009, we opened the major of Traditional Architecture as the first professional degree program within the College of Architecture to foster talents that respond to the new Hanok Architecture Market and acquired certification from Korea Institute of Architecture Education. The college of architecture in Myongji University has a strong foundation because many graduates have established themselves in the field of Korean architectural history and cultural assets.
Major of Architecture
In 2001, initially known as the Department of Architectural Engineering and later renamed to the Department of Architecture, all architectural education capabilities concentrated in the field of architectural design. The major of Architecture was designated for three consecutive years as a specialized excellent major supported by the Ministry of Education from 2003 to 2005. With this, we have developed professors and facilities at a world-class level, and obtained the first specialized degree certificate, internationally recognized from the Korea Institute of Architecture Education Accreditation (KAAB). Currently, we have Korea’s largest design studio facility and full-time faculty in Korea
Major of Traditional Architecture
In order to foster specialized architectural professionals to inherit and develop the history and culture of Korean traditional architecture, based on architectural design ability, the major was established in architecture department under college of architecture, in 2009. While sharing the 5-year architecture bachelor degree education program with Myongji University’s architecture major, specialized education is provided by adding courses specialized in traditional architecture such as architecture history, cultural heritage, archeology. Aside from the major in architecture, we acquired Architecture Education Certificate, provided by the Institute of Architecture and Education (KAAB) in 2007.
Major of Space Design
Space design is a discipline that can integrate various space design related fields, targeting interior and outdoor spaces such as interior, exhibition, display, stage, furniture, landscape, public design and lighting. The major of space design in Myongji University, efficiently responds to the expansion of the diversification of space-related fields, and as the first five-year university to foster space designers with a comprehensive understanding of space design, architecture and traditional architecture. Lastly, the department is proactively expanding education connectivity with adjacent academic fields related to space
